For as long as horses have been used for work or
play, speed has been their most prized characteristic. I remember the
first time I ever rode a horse, age 7. My first thought was to see how
fast he could run and I did just that, until I fell off. When I was young,
if they didn’t make my eyes water, I didn’t think much of them. I’ve
slowed down some, but I still like fast horses. Maybe you do too.
The history of the American Quarter Horse is full of
great, ranch-bred horses that could, at a match race on Sunday afternoon,
outrun everybody within four counties and then work all week long on the
ranch. Just a few of the many Quarter Horses we typically think of as
ranch-bred or working horses, but who were also great runners with
blinding speed, include Joe Hancock, Leo, Hard Twist, Driftwood, and Peter
McCue. The painting at the top of this page, Lone
Star Legacy, by Fred Stone, to us represents the
tradition and history of the great horses belonging to this breed, and
symbolizes our goal of producing horses that excel in a variety of
disciplines…………the all-around Quarter Horse.
